Reddit is dropping RSS support: what now?

Reddit RSS feeds are shutting down. What are the alternatives.

Reading time: 2m

Reddit has shut down its access via RSS feeds as of 13th October 2026. The reasoning given is that large-scale scraping and abuse from automated systems. This means anyone using a feed reader to access subreddits will stop seeing new content, unless they use Reddit directly, outside of their reader.

How Are Feed Readers Responding?

The vast majority of feed readers will likely stop updating any subreddit feeds. Most use the free RSS access that Reddit is shutting down. While they may work out alternative access methods, it will be difficult to predict the legality and reliability of any methods that aren’t bound to a commercial agreement with Reddit. While Reddit doesn’t publish commercial API access pricing for its content, its rumored to be prohibitively expensive and out of reach for most feed reader developers. So only the very big players, like Feedly, will be able to “pay to play” for Reddit access (though even its access seems flaky, if the Feedly subreddit is any indication). Even a well-established reader like Inoreader relied on the RSS access.

So while the dust hasn’t settled yet, its worth pausing for any readers that come out quickly with Reddit access claims. What is the legality and reliability of their access? Will this access come with costs that ultimately will get passed down to the end-users?

Alternatives and Using the Right Tool for the Job

At this stage, while I’ll keep abreast of alternative ways to bring subreddits into Foragd as feeds, your existing subreddit subscriptions will stop updating after 13th October 2026. You still have access to any posts from before this date, and any articles you saved will be always be available.

Arguably, viewing posts on Reddit through RSS has always been a subpar experience. Reddit is best viewed, on Reddit. This comes back to some of the fundamental differences between RSS and Atom and social media. Reddit posts are a focus on discussion; discussion of a link, question, or media. Feeds on the other hand are a focus on content; a blog post by someone, a podcast, or a video. Reddit is short-form content with comments front and center while feeds are deep content where that content comes first, comments secondary.

With this change, it’s also good time to consider the differences between feeds and social media and taking stock of your subscriptions to consider which ones you really value.
